Source of Database

The following budgetary data come from the Department of Defense's Future Years Defense Program Historical Database, and includes most but not all of the programs pertaining either wholly or partly to nuclear weapons (most programs concerning intelligence-related activities are notably missing). These data cover the period 1962-95. They were declassified by the DOD at the request of this study's authors and made available in March 1996. The entire database, which is substantially larger and includes detailed annual figures on force and personnel levels (including future-year projections), remains classified.

Full definitions and descriptions of many of the following programs can be found
in U.S. Department of Defense, Office of the Comptroller, FYDP Program Structure,
DOD 6045.7-H (Springfield, VA: National Technical Information Service, October 1993).
